Fontemorsi winery at Montescudaio
Fontemorsi is a dream come true - the creation of a small high-quality
vineyard in an area of Tuscany where for centuries world famous wines
have been produced.
Three enterprising friends brought their diverse talents together to
establish the Fontemorsi label in 2003. Their aim, to produce top quality
red, white and rose wines from organically grown vines.
The village of Montescudaio, to the south of Pisa, is of particular
historical interest in an area of outstanding beauty. Close by, overlooking
the vineyards, stands a farmhouse recently converted into three holiday
apartments, each with magnificent panoramic views. And in the olive
groves that surround the house, a large swimming pool has is been built
for the use of the guests.
Fontemorsi's 22 hectares are cultivated with both grape vines and olive
groves. The wines are based on the traditional Sangiovese, Canaiolo
and Malvasia varieties of grape, although the more internationally-acclaimed
Merlot and Cabernet varieties are also produced. The extra virgin olive
oil is cold pressed using the Frantoio, Maurino Leccino and Pendolino
olive.
The winery itself has modern wine-making equipment, using either steel
or oak in the fermentation process. At the centre of the ancient village
of Montescudaio, Fontemorsi has its own wine bar and shop for direct
sales to the public.
